"Closing the Gap on Our Yearly Ritual" - Time Out #128

Most families have personal traditions.

Some of these traditions are celebrated weekly, monthly or annually. Some traditions involve the extended family, immediate family or just your spouse/significant other.

Being the adventurous family we've always been, our regular "habit" this time of year is to personally view all the motion pictures nominated in January for the Academy Awards (AA). Not EVERY movie in every category for the annual awards night, but we try to see all the best movie, best actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress categories. As is usually the case each year, that total number of movies nominated in those specific areas is usually around 15 shows.

That is LOTS of movie viewing, mostly accomplished in a two-month time period, folks!

We usually don't bat 100% each year, but are almost always able to see all but a couple of the nominated flicks.

My bride, Debbie, and I have been doing this fun experience for many years, since we both have loved the big screen viewing since we were small children. As previously stated, I "cut my movie teeth" in the early 1950's in Our Town at our Crest, Mecca, Aggie, Campus, and Leachman sit-down theatres. Occasionally, I was able to get a licensed driver to take a car, and take me with them to our Moonlight Drive-In Theatre. My bride was doing her adolescent and teen years movie-going in " America's Finest City", San Diego. When we tied our marriage knot there in 1981, and moved to Our Town, we had already established many similar likes, movie-going near the top of the list, not too far below my absolute love of travel. In fact, during many of our U.S. travel adventures, we have attended a movie in the city or area we have visited, if it was a production we had not seen yet.

A few years ago in Our Town, another couple invited us to join them on AA night, to enjoy refreshments, and view the entire evening's happenings via television. The pre-awards red carpet interviews, and the elaborate clothing worn that day, always elicit lots of comments from our great group of 4 people! It really is a magical evening we enjoy each year with our dear friends! Ms. Debbie and I have always felt for us to fully understand who might be the Hollywood winners that night, we should see the nominated productions ahead of the awards. Thus, our obsessive quest each year to try to see the entire special list!

Most years, we attend our local 10-plex theatre, located in the northeast side of Our Town, to see the specific movies. However, each year, we always expand our viewing area, usually to the Oklahoma City regional theatres, too. As previously stated, occasionally, we catch several on our movie list when we are traveling around our wonderful U.S. of A.

After each viewing, usually the first question we ask each other outside the theatre, involves what numbers, 1 (low) to 10 (high), we "give" the movie? After each of us score the movie, we then fully discuss the pros and cons of the motion picture, and why we feel the way we do. After the AA list is released, my bride and I compare the ones we've seen, predicting if we think it or the actors/actresses will win or not on awards night?

Professional movie critics, we are not; amateur movie lovers, we definitely are!

So, we are coming down to the end of this year's timeline; Sunday, March 4th, we need to have our total movie viewing completed.

Once again, we are in a movie-viewing race against the calendar.

Fun, fun, fun times for us, and lots of delicious popcorn to munch on, too!

See you at the movies???
