Life's Ups and Downs As Seen Through Athletics - Time Out #330

Athletics are life!

What you say?

I say athletics involve the same physical efforts, emotional feelings, and fellowship experienced throughout one's non-athletic life.

Wow.

Let's breakdown the various parts of my comparisons. Commitment to time, physical exercise, and, usually, some financial expenditures; all of these factors are carefully considered by prospective athletes. These same challenges are considered, when deciding what one will do, occupation-wise, in life. Of course, people do change their career paths in employment, but at each juncture, decisions similar to athletic questions have to be confronted.

Now, let's consider the sporting events themselves. Simply stated, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

When your athletic team is the winner, you have a wonderful, mentally-high feeling. This euphoria is much like you experience when you accomplish a meaningful achievement at work, school, or in an positive interaction with a work associate. As the sports victories multiply, you get more and more confidence, identical with similar feelings in everyday life.

With defeat on the sports field, you have to figure out just what happened to cause you to come up on the short end of the scoreboard? Usually, you realize your team/self cannot win all the time, just like everything you do in life doesn't turn out positive. You learn to recover following your defeats, leaning on your teammates to help you work out your feelings/emotions. At the same time. your teammates look to you for strength in their recovery processes. Remember the old saying, setbacks build character? I personally think victories do, too!

How about physical conditioning and injuries?

Well, these issues certainly happen in life outside sports, too.

Physical conditioning requires a great deal of effort and sacrifice, not to mention soreness and mental toughness. These factors are much more pronounced if a sports injury causes the athlete to miss practices and/or games. Of course, we all know these same adverse events or similar ones, may happen any time throughout our life. We have to find ways to deal with these adverse situations, too.

Finally, let's revisit that previously mentioned term, character.

What a complex subject that is, dear readers in Our Town and far beyond.

I like to think this word describes the entire comparison of sports and life.

In my humble opinion, character is the result of all variables involved in sports which are the same things we experience in life, beginning in our formative years, and continually expanding as we age. Character is that nebulous mixture of all the good, bad, and indifferent things that happen to us, and how we mentally shape them inside our head. Repeating, sports participation mimics life experiences.........yes, it does!
